Pakistani Media Portrys Bad image of Pakistan

Dawn the most prestigious newspaper of Pakistan exposed one of the TV cannels making a drama of Pakistan’s pverty

In the pictures below is the crew from a private TV channel trying, what could best be described as manipulation if not outright dishonesty. A nomad woman who, along with her child, is on her way to work, was asked to take off her kid’s clothes. They then filmed the child naked, most probably to depict abject poverty in the outskirts of Islamabad. Once the filming was done, the crew walked away without much remorse, but after giving the child a note of Rs100. Arundhati Roy was right: there is money in poverty. Journalist organisations believe that at a time when television journalism in the country has touched new heights in terms of providing truthful news to millions of viewers in the country, use of unethical means by a handful remains a matter of concern.—Text and photos by Tanveer Shahzad

Islamic Courts in Swat Providing Quick and Easy Justice to People of Swat Valley

swat_qazi_courtAfter the announcement of the Nizam E Adal Regulation in District Swat the people in the vally seem to be satisfied and are flocking to The Qazi courts for their cases. BBC’s Reporter Rifatullah Orakzai from Swat has written an Article in Urdu about his experiences in the valley Here is the translation of the article.

Qazi courts in Swat valley have started their work actively, people from all areas of the District Swat are coming to these courts in great numbers and are submitting their applications, while Qazis are giving decision on the cases within 2 – 3 days time only unlike the Pakistan’s present System which takes years and years for cases.

After the peace agreement in Swat already existing seven religious courts have started operation among them 2 are in the Town of Mingora, the head quarter of Swat.

swat_qazi_court_peopleA large number of people were seen in these centers among them there were also several women. There was no Police or Security on the gates of the Qazi courts in the circuit House.

When entered the Regional Qazi Babuzai there were 2 Qazis sitting to gather and were receiving applications from the people. The applicants were standing in shape of a group at about one yard distance from Qazi. Each applicant goes to Qazi at his/her turn and submits the Application and Qazi speaks to the applicant and writes instructions on the application.

Qazi courts are following a very simple procedure for submission and justice. There was no Lawyer with the applicants rather every applicant was speaking in his favor directly with the Qazi and presenting his case. Qazi would than put remarks on the application for the head of the police stations and ask for the answers from police head.

After the Qazis order on application the applicant himself would take the application to Police station and police is bound to bring the second party within a day or 2 in front of the court

Many smaller cases have been taken care of in these new courts. Most of these cases are of trade, land and family maters. Ilaqa Qazi or Regional Judge has powers of a magistrate in Swat.

swat_qazi_court1Mowlana Pirzada Noor Mohammad regional Qazi said most of applications he has received are of civil nature and he tries to make a decision quickly and with mutual agreement of both the parties.

He further emphasized that since this system is new and applet courts are also not yet formed hence it is best to make a decision that is mutually acceptable and decision is made with consensus of both the parties hence no one feels like appealing against the decision.

He said has so far received about 100 applications of which more than 20 have already been cleared while he tries to bring about the decision in 2 to 3 days rather some cases have actually been decided in one day too.

The BBC correspondent reports that there was also some noise in the court too compared to other courts where there is usually complete silence. Some applicants were also talking loudly with the Qazis. Applicants were also shaking hand with Qazi which not seen in standard courts of Pakistan.

On some occasion applicants received phone calls on their cell phone during the hearing of the cases and Qazi or any other official did not stop any one from receiving calls

One applicant Qari Fazal Mola told the reporter that after the Qazi courts in Swat people are quite happy as it was one of the long standing demands of the people of Swat.

He said he had sold a Rickshaw to some one of which 10.000 rupees were remaining and the party was not paying he filed a case in the civil court but nothing happened in 2 & half years while he expects in Qazi court his case will be solved with short time.

He said if this system is implemented successfully it would remind us the time of wali of Swat when court decisions were made quickly and in fact justice was provided to the people at their doorsteps.

The present Qazi courts of Swat are formed under the regulation of Nizam-e-adl of 1997 the NWFP governments announced regulation of Qazi courts has already been approved by the Chief Minister and president Zardari is still to sign the same. According to this regulation an applet court will be established in Malakand which will be equal to High Court.

Theatre Festival at the Alhamra Arts Council from Feb 23 to 28

The Ajoka Theatre will inspire its audience with its popular plays under the ‘Spring Theatre Festival’ scheduled to be held at the Alhamra Arts Council from Feb 23 to 28. Shahid Nadeem, a noted playwright who is the artistic director of the Ajoka theatre, told Dawn that the ‘prevailing conditions’ did not allow Ajoka to hold Panj Pani festival this year. Ajoka is celebrating its 25 years this year and a festival has been arranged, which will showcase
popular and landmark plays. These performances include Bullah, Toba Tek Singh, Bala King, Hotel Moenjodaro and Chalk Chakkar.

He said the festival would be the opening chapter of the yearlong activities of Ajoka’s silverjubilee celebrations. In March another festival of popular plays by Ajoka will be held in Islamabad at the National Art Gallery in which eight plays will be staged. There will be a festival at the Karachi Arts Council in April.

To hold an exhibition of paintings is a matter of great responsibility right from packing of the artworks to putting them on display. Every artist feels anxious while sending one’s artworks to some art gallery especially when the exhibition is out of town, for one is concerned about the safety of one’s artworks — be it paintings, sculpture, ceramics or other forms of art. Of late, something unusual happened with the paintings of none other than a high-profile painter of the country, the late Hanif Ramay.

A collection of his 330 works was sent to the National Gallery Islamabad to be put on display.

The reason for choosing the National Art Gallery was that no other gallery had the kind of space which could accommodate such a big collection.

A PNCA official, requesting anonymity, told this correspondent that paintings were safely sent from Lahore to the PNCA Islamabad in a capacious vehicle. The exhibition went well and was highly appreciated by the art lovers.

After the exhibition, the shipment of paintings, 185 in number (the total number of paintings has yet to be returned), to Lahore was handled carelessly and paintings were stuffed in a small van from Islamabad. It may be mentioned here that the visual art department of PNCA looks after the fine arts activity in Islamabad. The outcome was that some seven to eight paintings got damaged. There were gashes in those paintings.

The official said Ibrahim Ramay had registered a complaint with the PNCA authorities and its director general had initiated an inquiry in this regard. It is learnt that Mr Ibrahim was satisfied the way the works were exhibited and he had no complaints except the fact that he had utter regrets about the way the paintings were transported to Lahore.

The All-Pakistan Music Conference will hold a musical evening with singer Sara Zaman and Shahbaz Qadri at the Alhamra Arts Council. Sitar will also be played during the evening by Farrukh Bashir who is also the Pakistan Television Center, Lahore, general manager.

Tabla would be played by Abdul Sattar Tari, Sarangi by Zohaib and Muhammad Aslam will play harmonium. Musical evenings by the conference for the last 50 years have become part and parcel of Lahore’s cultural scene.

Its been over a month that parking inside the Lahore Arts Council has been banned for the public. The new executive director of Lahore Arts Council, Kamran Afzal Cheema had said over a week before that parking facility would be open to public in some days. He said lists were being prepared for the regular visitors and stickers would also be issued, however, nothing has been done so far.

Mr Cheema told this correspondent on Saturday that the process would take some more days. An Alhmara Art Center employee said a list of only 12 people had been prepared, who would be given parking facility inside Alhamra. These names include some high-ranking officials from different departments. A large number of Alhamra visitors, including teachers of art classes, members of Adabi Baithak, theatre lovers, and art exhibition visitors, have expressed concern over the situation.

Despite repeated requests by them the parking facility inside the council’s office is still a farreaching thing for them.

‘Domaki’ is the language spoken by people living in Gilgit, Hunza Valley and Momanabad that has more chances to extinct as according to 1989 sensus, Domaki language have only five hundred speakers.

However, ‘Zangskari’ and ‘Sapti’ are the language that were spoken in India and Pakistan years ago have totally diminished but there is not a single orator of these languages today.

According to linguists, different social, demographic and political factors are all contributing to the rapid disappearance of languages.

Fakhar Zaman, Chairman Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL) said that all the languages spoken in the country should be given equal status and considered as national languages. He said that “We should strive to make the mother languages as part of curriculum on the primary level and establish Urdu as official language instead of English.”

PAL is giving equal importance to all languages of the country and a comprehensive program has been formulated with regard to all languages. The book consisting of the selection of prose and poetry written in every language from 1947 to 2008 are being compiled.

These languages include Urdu, English, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Brahvi, Seraiki, Hindko, Sheena, Balti, Khawar and Kashmiri.

He said that official assurances has been given in the recent conferences of Sindh and Islamabad arranged by PAL to give due promotion and status to all the languages and that the mother tongues will be given due importance and financial assistance of the institutions working in this regard will be increased.

He also proposed to the government that Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto and Balochi Universities like Federal Urdu University should be established so that the message of Unity, Brotherhood and Solidarity should be spread through the federation.

UNESCO has launched an online Atlas of Languages in Danger on 19 February. This interactive digital tool provides updated data about approximately 2,500 endangered languages around the world and can be continually supplemented, corrected and updated, thanks to contributions from its users.

The Atlas, presented on the eve of International Mother Language Day (21 February), enables searches according to several criteria, and ranks the 2,500 endangered languages that are listed according to five different levels of vitality: unsafe, definitely endangered, severely endangered, critically endangered and extinct.

Pakistan safe place to host sporting events: Lokuge

gamini-lokugeKARACHI, Feb 21: Asserting that Pakistan is a safe place to host sporting events, Sri Lankan Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge says his country will give its allout support to Pakistan in staging the 2011 World Cup in a befitting manner.

“Pakistan supported us in staging the 1996 World Cup in our country. Now we will not forget our friends. Every part of the world has been hit by terrorists,” Lokuge, who is on a visit here on invitation of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said while talking to reporters at the National Stadium.

Stressing that Asia’s cricket playing countries should not abandon playing in Pakistan, he said all the other teams should also visit Pakistan.

“We are playing cricket here safely. If there had been any security problems then I wouldn’t be visiting here. I came here so that a positive message could be sent to the world that Sri Lankan team is visiting Pakistan with its sports minister,” Lokuge said.

“We didn’t split the series under Indian cricket board pressure. The reason is that we have good relations with everyone,” the minister said.

Lokuge said Pakistan is “a safe place to host sporting events”, adding that the Sri Lankan government has trusted Pakistan regarding the security of the (Sri Lankan) cricket team.

Sri Lankan cricketers are currently touring Pakistan for a twomatch Test series. It is their second leg of the Pakistan tour since January when they visited Pakistan for a five-match One day International series.

He was confident that four South Asian Test-playing nations – India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh – will successfully host the World Cup in 2011.

On the ICC Champions Trophy, Lokuge said Sri Lanka was confident that it will successfully host the prestigious event later this year.

“They [ICC] wanted to take the tournament to Dubai but we said since Sri Lanka is the alternative venue it should be hosted by us. Now the Champions Trophy will be held in Sri Lanka and it will be confirmed after sorting out details of the weather conditions there”

He responding to a book authored by ‘David E Sanger’ and said: “ I don’t know what the writer was trying to prove but what he has written is far from the fact and completely distorted”. “May be he was trying to create sensation.” He in strong tone said he the writer should have shown some character and its all Rubbish.

“The allegations being leveled against the armed forces and intelligence agencies of the country will lead to the defeat in war on terror,” he feared.

He came hard on the agreement reached between NWFP government and Tehreek Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi, saying it was totally unjustified in the backdrop of what the terrorists have been doing against the law enforcing agencies and unarmed civilians of the country.

The former president said attempts are being made to malign the armed forces.

Pakistani Media is slaming Ret: General Musharraf like as if he is a street boy, who just committed a crime. The same people who used to bow before him and used to say poems and write endless articles of praises are abusing him. TV channels like GEO are talking to so called experts journalists and trying to prove thing they DON’T even have any idea of.

General Musharraf too in his capacity as president of Pakistan did not show this kind of anger when Newsweek called Pakistan the most dangerous nationa in the world however when it came over to him he was quick to respond and was angry.

According to Werner, EU garment units are moving from USA and EU to China and India and brands are looking for more vantures to meed the demand and are interested to have joint ventures in Pakistan. Brand like Tommy and Hilfiger also want to shift logistic capacity towards Pakistan, Research and Development and ware‑housing facilities at the supplier’s end to cut their cost.

Dr. Baig said that Pakistan has high growth on textile and apparel but has achieved less share of international market. China topped increased US market share 36% followed by Bangladesh 21%, India 18%, Morocco 19%, Pakistan 13% and on the other hand Korea lost 20% USA market share. Similarly, in the European market, China topped to gain 29% with Vietnam 28%, India 19% and Pakistan only 1.5% whereas Philippines lost 11%.

Mr. Nicola Monti of Werner International informed Dr. Baig that Pakistan garments manufacturers can cut
their cost upto 45% in sewing by improving efficiency. The labour productivity is very low in Pakistan at the moment.

Our regional competitors take 75 minutes to complete and produce one piece whereas we take 133 minutes for the same work, we also waste 30% in finishing and 12% in washing. As per bench mark study of Pakistan textile and apparel conducted by Werner International, some of our garments units are over staffed by 57%. These are internal negative factors where as the external factors are no duty free market access to EU and negative image and perception of Pakistan .
