Shujaat asks Gilani to convene All Party Conference
ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Thursday urged Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to immediately convene an All Party Conference (APC) to resolve all political differences.
Unveiling the ‘Grand National Reconciliation Strategy’ to resolve all conflicts and confrontation among political parties, Hussain told reporters at his residence that 'all party leaders and elders should sit together on a table to evolve a consensus over the conflicts which are threatening the political harmony and democratic process, which is in teething stage'.
Shujaat was talking to the media immediately after a meeting with former president Pervez Musharraf who had come to offer condolences to the PML-Q president after death of his mother.
'This is not the right time for carrying out personal grudges and personal egos,' he said adding 'rather, prudent steps need to be taken to avoid further destabilization'.
'The leaders and parties who boycotted the electoral process should also be taken on board,' he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, another PML-Q leader and former minister for information Mohammad Ali Durrani had also floated the idea of taking all political parties, including those who boycotted the general elections on board and make efforts to steer the country out of the present political stalemate.
The PML-Q president offered his party’s full cooperation if the government initiated a process of reconciliation and dialogue, saying that 'we would be happy to cooperate if the PML could bridge the differences between both the parties – PPP and PML-N'.
When asked whether any of the parties (PPP or PML-N) had sought his favours in this regard, Shujaat said this was solely his own idea and nobody had sought favours from him.
'I don’t know who is responsible for the political crisis, the country is facing today, however, I know it needs two to tango. Some people make mistakes but the entire nation has to face the consequences,' he added.
Calling upon political elites to resolve all issues amicably, Chaudhry Shujaat said the rulers should use 'collective wisdom' to resolve all outstanding issues.
He advised all youth, adult and political activists to observe calm and restraint and not indulges in protests and agitation that could destabilize the entire system.
'No agitation or protest can resolve the issues being faced by the country today. Everyone should, rather, take care of the state which is already facing numerous challenges,' he added.
