ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) has said any relief granted under the so-called National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) was not acceptable to it.

'The NRO is a blot on the political system and democracy and the PML-N leadership would not like to use it in its defence at any cost,' Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and central PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told reporters after submitting a requisition for convening the National Assembly (NA) here on Friday.

The submission of requisition coincided with the federal cabinet’s decision to convene a National Assembly session on Saturday (today) to discuss the situation arising out of the imposition of Governor’s rule in Punjab. The convening of session by the government surprised many as it is very rare for a house of the parliament to meet on Saturday.

Chaudhry Nisar said the opposition’s decision to requisition a session has forced the government to convene it at its own, and said the government was otherwise scared of hearing the echoes of protest over the murder of justice, inside the parliament.

He said the opposition will present its point of view over the travesty of justice and imposition of governor’s rule in Punjab at the forum of the National Assembly in a forceful manner.

He said the Governor rule cannot be imposed without taking a prior approval from the cabinet.

He alleged that the controversial judgment disqualifying Sharif brothers had been handed out by the PCO judiciary in collusion with President Asif Ali Zardari.

He said the verdict followed Nawaz Sharif’s refusal to agree to the extension of tenure of Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar and accept offers from the judiciary as well as Aiwan-e-Sadr.

He said the struggle by the PML-N was not meant for entering corridors of power rather was directed at restoration of a truly independent judiciary in the country. 'Otherwise we would never have sacrificed 15 ministries at the centre and could have kept Government in Punjab intact'.

He said the PML-N will not brook any hurdles in the way of its just struggle. 'This movement withstood the opposition by General Musharraf and will not subside with the wishes of Zardari'.

Terming General (retd) Pervez Musharraf and Asif Ali Zardari as two sides of the same coin, he said a fake system introduced by Musharraf was still in force.

While making Zardari a target of criticism, he applauded Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani as a ‘decent man’ who wants democracy to flourish and 17th amendment to be done away with. He, however, said he was working within his own constraints and limitations.

He said Zardari makes promises to break and takes pride in backtracking on even written agreements by terming it a victory in the game of politics. He pointed out that Nixon had to resign as president after revelation that he had told a lie and Clinton had to face impeachment after committing the same crime.

Answering a question about the possibility of cooperation with PML-Q, he said it was for the PML-Q leadership to decide if they want to sit with a person waging a struggle for the cause of justice or those who had dubbed their party as ‘qatil league’.

'Sentiments of the people of Pakistan including Punjab are before us. Let us see how they react,' he remarked. He also referred to the gesture of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif who went to Chaudhry Shujaat to offer condolences over the demise of her mother.

It was perhaps for the first time that the PML-N publicly expressed its readiness for working with the PML-Q, an idea it had been rejecting to avert any threat to the Punjab government in the past.

The leader of the opposition in the National Assembly said Shahbaz Sharif was still the constitutional Chief Minister of Punjab as those who declared him as ineligible to hold the office were not regarded by the party as legitimate judges.
