Govt committed to overcome all problems with masses’ support :Sherry



ISLAMABAD, Feb 17 (P D N): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said on Tuesday that February 18 was an important milestone in long journey of democracy in the country and the government was committed to face all challenges with the support of the masses. Talking to APP in connection with Day of Democracy being celebrated in the country on Wednesday (Feb 18) she said it would be the day to further strengthen democratic forces.
She said Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was striving to strengthen democratic institutions in the country and had rendered sacrifices to establish a democratic order in the country with the support of the masses.
The Minister said that democracy was revived after a long time on February 18,2008 due to the sagacity and sacrifice of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto.She said that although the elections were not totally free and fair but keeping in mind the problems of the masses the PPP decided to form governments at centre and provinces with the cooperation of other political parties.
Sherry Rehman said that PPP government had introduced a policy of reconciliation which led the country on the road to progress and prosperity.She said that Benazir Bhutto had laid down her life for the people of Pakistan and vowed that PPP would continue the mission of its great leader.
She said that February 18 as a Day of Democracy, he said February 18 is an important day in the history of the country as democracy was restored on that day after long military rule.
Sherry said that Pakistan was facing numerous problems during the dictatorial rule but the present political set up has taken very positive initiatives to redress these problems on priority basis for providing relief to the masses.
She said ultimate goal of democracy is to ensure the dignity and fundamental rights of individuals to achieve social justice and social development.
The PPP leader said that success of nation lies in the strength of democratic institutions and it is the responsibility of every citizen to come forward and play his role in this regard.
Sherry said it was the great achievement of the political dispensation that a dictator quit without any agitation on the streets or bloodshed.
