Karachi the Gateway of Pakistan
Karachi is the capital of Sindh Province in Pakistan. The name Karachi is derived from King Kusha, the son of Hindu God Lord Rama. In 1842, the British who ruled India took possession of the city and made it a district of India. British utilized its natural harbor and developed it into a busy port city. In 1947, it was made the capital of the new nation of Pakistan. Later, the capital was shifted to Islamabad but Karachi remains the economic center of Pakistan. It is also known as the financial capital of Pakistan. It is now the financial and commercial center as well as the largest port of Pakistan.
Area & Location: Lies on the coast of the Arabian Sea, Karachi is situated in the southeastern Pakistan and in the northwest of the Indus Delta. It covers a total area of 3,527 sq. km. Malir River and Lyari River pass through the city. The city is home to 11.5 million of its residents making it the second largest city in the world.
Tourist Attractions: The magnificent beaches and waterfront persuade the tourists to visit the city.
Transportation: Jinnah International Airport, the modern international airport in the city brings the world closer to Karachi. Karachi is also served by various shipping ports like Port of Karachi and Port Qasim. Pakistan Railways link the city with rest of the country. The government is in the plan to construct a light-rail based mass transit system in the city to provide easy and fast commutation to its passengers.
