Govt to ensure purchase of wheat at support price
LAHORE, Feb 18 (Pakistan Daily News): Federal Government would evolve an effective monitoring policy for procurement of wheat with an aim to ensure provision of support price of Rs 950 per 40 kg to growers across the country. Briefing newsmen after the federal cabinet meeting held at Governor House here on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in the chair, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman said “a meeting of Chief Ministers of all the four provinces would be called to discuss matters pertaining to procurement of wheat.”
The cabinet meeting was also attended by Governor Punjab Salman Taseer and secretaries of different departments besides federal ministers.
She said Government would procure 6.50 million tons wheat during the current season and number of procurement centres would be increased to facilitate growers.”
Food and Agriculture department briefed the cabinet about wheat crop situation and its procurement.
The minister said production target for the current season has been fixed at 25 million tons which is two million more than requirement of the country which is 23 million tons. “Acreage under wheat crops has also registered an increase of 6 percent as compared to last year.” the minister said.
She said that PASSCO has been directed to achieve its procurement target by purchasing wheat from growers at fixed price.
She said there would be free movement of wheat among the provinces while its release price for mills would also be uniform.
