Zardari, Nawaz asked to avoid confrontation
RAWALPINDI: Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for democracy and an independent judiciary, says a PML-N leader.
Talking to journalists after offering fateha at the Benazir Bhutto memorial at the Liaquat Bagh on Saturday, PML-N’s senior vice-president Makhdoom Javed Hashmi called Ms Bhutto a beacon of democracy and said no one would be allowed to disturb the country’s nascent democratic set-up.
He said the PML-N had great respect for Ms Bhutto, adding he could not believe his party workers had vandalised the site where she had been assassinated.
A memorial stage, set up by PPP workers, was vandalised allegedly by PML-N activists after a Supreme Court ruling disqualifying their leaders.
‘We respect Benazir Bhutto like we respect our sister. We always pray to God to grant eternal rest to her soul in heaven,’ Hashmi said.
He urged President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif to resolve their differences through dialogue and avoid confrontation.
He said that supremacy of the Constitution was his party’s prime concern, which was obligatory upon all political leaders, adding that they should work for the rule of law.
The PML-N leader said that the public mandate of Feb 18 polls would be respected and the PPP-led government would complete its tenure.
Describing the current situation as one of the most severe crises in Pakistan’s history, he said all politicians and the nation should shun differences and forge unity for the sake of the country. ‘As a political worker, I urge all political leaders to come forward to make Pakistan a real democratic country.’
He said that although Benazir Bhutto was not among ‘us, but her ideology, ideals and political wisdom should serve as a guiding force’.
PPP workers and local leaders, including Agha Riazul Islam, PSF president Chaudhry Banaras and general secretary Malik Waqar, welcomed Makhdoom Hashmi at the monument. A good number of PML-N workers were also present.
Later, Hashmi laid wreaths on behalf of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif.
